Ricky Lynn Gregg
Throughout the years Ricky Lynn Gregg has inspired so many. His family was a big support and inspiration when he started his music career. When he was young, he started forming his owned sound, influences from classic rock and hard core country music. After a being involved with a couple bands, Ricky started his own project. He was signed and mentored under the management of then-label chief Jimmy Bowen in the record label community. And now he has the knowledge to influence and mentor young performers in the high stress world of the music business.
Ricky Lynn Gregg was born in Longview, TX, to a family that already had four boys. A family full of musicians, his dad, Melvin Gregg, was a southern gospel singer, his mom, Lucille Gregg, was also a vocalist, and most of his brothers learned to play the guitar and be in their own band. Music was in the blood so Ricky Lynn Gregg was born with the passion and the talent, when he was 10 he was singing in the church. By the age of 14 he assembled his own band. When he was 15 he was playing in the honkytonks. When he was 19 years old, he set off for Dallas, where he joined the rock group Savvy and then Head East. Later he started the Ricky Lynn Project, which focused on the old style of country, but uniquely rounded with the flair and energy of rock. This was Ricky’s style of music, the one we all love and hear today.
He was able to take mantas of different music sounds that he grew up on and that he liked and form his own sound. Jimmy Bowen saw the passion in Ricky Lynn Gregg's eyes and was offered his first record label that he signed with, Liberty Records. He found throughout the years that record companies do not want to sign an artist if they sound like someone else on the radio or stage. A unique and new sound is what the record labels are looking for. In 1992 he released a hit debut studio album, Ricky Lynn Gregg, which produced three hit singles; namely, If I Had a Cheatin’ Heart, Can You Feel It, and Three Nickels and a Dime. Gregg’s commercial success rocketed, and the following year, in 1993, Billboard ranked him at No. 4 on its list of Top New Country Artists that year. He also received a nomination for Best New Country Act by Performance magazine. Then, on the heels of the huge success of his self-titled debut disc, Gregg’s second album, Get a Little Closer, was unveiled, revealing his edgy-meets-traditional approach to the country genre. The next year, Rick Lynn Gregg chose to leave Liberty after his manager and record chief, Bowen, became ill and stepped down.
Through tuff trials he found a way to stick it out and push through the negative and to further along his music career. I asked him what advice would you give a young artist starting in this career and he said stay persistence; he also said really get to know your instrument whether it be your vocals or your guitar and haste makes for a short career. And if you mess up, learn from it. He has seen so many artists go though tough trials with good talent and then give up. Truly believe in yourself and follow your dream. When Ricky was young, he asked one of his brother’s, who was a banker, what he thought of his chose to go into the music business. The brother said he would do it all over again to follow his dream and to forth with his plain.
One advised that he gives to artist is when you are setting up your songs for your CD you want to start of strong and then end the CD with a heartfelt song. Songs 2 through 9 could be a good story that you are telling. You want them to come back for more and play the CD over again.
During his youth, when he was starting out, he had enough since to not get over loaded with bills. His family taught him well, he has seen so many artists that believe if they had all this stuff that this would get them in the doors. You don’t need to spend or take a loan out for stuff when the audience comes to see you and your instrument.
Ricky Lynn Gregg is a man to stay determined. He would always find a way to continue on with his passion. He has always believed in who he is. He would find ways to take control of his career and move forward. He saw the internet and realized that this could be a great tool for his success. He has noted that he was the first country act to have a website.
Ricky Lynn Gregg has a big heart. He volunteers allot of his time to different charities; however, one of his charities that he really works close with because it was in his blood is the Trail of Hope. He has passion for his Native Americans ancestors, and launched a charity called Trail of Hope, which has contributed a total of more than a million dollars' worth of goods and supplies to disadvantaged Cherokee, Choctaw, and Sioux. Later on this year he plans to work with the Arthritis Foundation in memory of his mom, Lucille Gregg.
In the future, Ricky Lynn Gregg has a couple of projects that are hush, hush. He told James a couple of secrets that will be revealed in dues time. Ricky Lynn Gregg looks like he's out there having fun and has no plains on stopping. NashvilleRadio.tv looks forward on seeing the continued growth on his music career.
